Dear Clare: Don't Hate Me
I don’t usually write directly to Clare in this blog, but I do intend for her to read most of this someday. This may be a post that she’ll need to see.
Dear Clare,
A few months ago, I wrote a post about the “lasts” in kids’ lives that parents sometimes never notice or even realize is a last. I was talking about the last time that things happen—like the last diaper, the last bottle or sippy cup, or the last time that kids crawl into their parents’ bed. These things are far overshadowed by “firsts” like words, steps, or teeth. You, your Mom and I passed another last sometime in the past year. If I’m lucky, you’ll never notice until you read this post.
Someday, if and when you have kids, you may understand. It’s not that I don’t respect your stuff; I do. It’s not that I wanted to upset you either; I would never purposefully do that. Your Mom would tell you that I’m just overly anal about throwing things out and getting rid of clutter; she’s right. But it’s also that I couldn’t risk that those things would come out again.
In the past year, we’ve had great fun playing games like Clue Jr., Monopoly Jr., and Sorry. You can count, read, follow rules, and even strategize now. Don’t misunderstand that I didn’t have lots of fun playing games with you when you were three or four years old; I did and I often miss that age. But there are things about toddler games that are really mind-numbing for adults—that’s what I’m sure you’ll understand someday. That’s also why, when you were out of the house, I got rid of Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and Hi Ho Cherry-O. I just couldn’t risk that you’d pull them out from under your bed some night and want to play them again. We had our last time playing—whenever that may have been—and I can’t go back. If you ever notice them gone and miss them, I hope you’ll forgive me.
Love, Dad
P.S. Just in case you don’t notice, the Dora DVDs are the next thing to go.

I'm counting down the days until I can throw the dora dvd's
Oh, golly. I got rid of the Hi Ho Cherry-O game AGES ago. I couldn't stand it one more minute. I remember playing it as a kid and thinking it was great, so I got it for the boys...but OH. MY. That game is HORRIBLE! Long and boring and just awful! And the boys LOVED it!
Sweet love of God, I hate Hi Ho Cherry-O. And Buckaroo.
I need new games.
Good for you! I need to follow your lead.
Stuff equals stress. Speaking of stuff, my daughter has far too many stuffed animals already, and so as to keep the crib population down, my wife and I periodically relocate a few to the closet with the hopes that they need not return.
Candyland had to go. That game was depressingly cheery and for some reason my son always cheated when he played. I would love to toss Trouble out of the window too because it takes to long to play with a four year old. And Hungry Hippos is only fun when you are thinking about playing it. The act of playing it is about as fun as watching Ellen.
Lol!
I agree with Steve!
I can think of a word that rhymes with BUCK a roo. Can YOU?
LOL! How funny! We also ditched Hi Ho Cherrio! Darn cherries, they were everywhere!
dude i collect Candylands... wish i knew.
that was a joke folks.
question: did you burn them?
because that's the only way to rod yourself of board game evil
Even worse. I have to play a Dora version of Candyland.
Talk about mindnumbing.
Dude, everytime I think I'm close to the statue of limitations on non-game use and it can be tossed the little buggers pull it out for another round. It's like they know I'm going to toss it and are trying to prove they still play with the games.
Man, I can't stop laughing...
I am stuck. I had a similar plan, but like zoesdad, my daughter periodically plays EVERY game, just seemingly to prove that she still plays them.
I managed to get her to willingly part with a couple via good old bribery (cash, or "no new toys until we have a place to put them").
But despite the carefully crafted attacks, when it comes to Candyland and Chutes and Ladders (and few others)... I can only sadly look into the battle zone and mumble, "Target Remains"
