Why I Write

Okay. I guess I do know why I’m writing this.

When my daughter was born in 2001, I began writing a journal for her. My mother had done a similar thing for me…but her journal was more of a listing of teachers, vacations and trips to the emergency room. My journal for Clare describes her first foods and first movements, our holidays with family, her friends at “playschool” (what we call daycare), and some plain old day to day activities. I haven’t been very good at keeping it up though.

This blog is a continuation of Clare’s journal. It’s a record for her of what she’s done, what I’ve done, what we’ll do together. It’s something for her to look back at when she’s 20, 30 or older…in whatever archaic or new technological form it may be in by then. The rest of you are here to keep me honest…and to keep me working. It’s easy to put a journal away in a drawer…it’s a lot more interesting and entertaining (for me anyway) to check out Clare’s journal online, to see who else is reading, and to get some feedback.

It seems like a common enough practice for new bloggers to post a list of 100 things about themselves. That seems pretty appropriate here. Not only will anyone reading this learn a little about who I am, but it’ll be a source for Clare to know who I am too. So here, in some particular order, are 100 things about me.

And now a question to all of you other dads with blogs. I hate to be skeptical, but should I be concerned about these anonymous comments with links to non-related sites? Should I not even click on them? I don't want to have to disable anonymous comments, but I don't want to be swamped with links to weight loss and money making websites either.

I'm afraid spam has arrived to Blogs...
I like your idea of writing down a diary for your kid. I think of a blog as a space to put down your thoughts and I realized that I can remember things that happened to me some time ago that otherwise I would not remember...

Wow. That was a lot of spam. I just think you were very unlucky. I might get two or three a week at most (although today I got two).

I loved that you dropped out of Organic Chemistry. Me too! Orgo Sucks!

Orgo does suck. All I remember is something about carbon atoms making chairs and boats. I knew it was time to drop out when I had a mid-term exam on a Monday right after being in a play the weekend before. My grade was something like "D...but nice job in the play."

You can outlaw anonymous posts to block out the evil spamdoers. Though then they can still sign on with made-up names. Dunno.

I think the spammers are alerted by new blog creations.

you can delete the spam posts; I do it. Because they're commenting to get links onto the internet that boost their ratings in Google. So just delete all of them...

I too lived in NYC (for 10 years) and absolutely loved it, the walking etc. Great list!

That list made me smile and was a great idea! I think I might do something similar on my blog-imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you know! I'm glad I stumbled across your site. I'll enjoy popping in once in awhile.
Best,
